English: meanings, pronunciation with recordings, and where the word comes from
Meet a word you do not know and look it up without leaving your page, in English, Arabic or Turkish.
Three languages
The letters you type choose the language: Arabic letters are looked up in Arabic, a Turkish letter in Turkish. For a word that could be either English or Turkish, tap EN, AR or TR. In Settings › Extensions you choose which of the three sit beside the box, so a reader of English and Arabic sees just those two.
- English: meanings, pronunciation with recordings you can play, and the etymology, from Wiktionary
- Turkish: Vikisözlük's meanings, and where the word comes from in Vikisözlük, Wiktionary and Nişanyan's etymological dictionary
- Arabic: the root (tap it to look up the root itself), meanings from Wiktionary and Vikisözlük, the etymology of the word and of its root verb, the root's articles in the classical dictionaries al-Mufradat, Maqayis al-Lugha, Lisan al-Arab and al-Sihah with the word marked, and its ayahs in the Qur'an with a translation
Where it works
- Type
/and choose Word: a popup over the page you are reading or writing, gone when you are done - Or pin the Word widget to a page or a dashboard, for a page where you look words up all the time
Where it comes from
Meanings and etymologies come from Wiktionary and Vikisözlük, the free dictionaries, and from etimolojiturkce.com for Nişanyan. The classical dictionaries and the Qur'an corpus (about 45 MB, from OpenITI and the Quranic Arabic Corpus) are downloaded once, the first time you ask, and searched on your computer after that. Nothing about you is sent with a lookup beyond the word.
